Step 1. Interior design inspiration
The first step of your interior design process should always be gathering new information, ideas and inspiration. Keep in mind that a good interior design should reflect who you are as a person, so don’t stay overly attached to just one style. You can mix & match different styles and make them work together to create the best solution for your own home.
Pinterest is one of the best online tools to gather and organize your ideas. You can find inspiration of pretty much you can think of. You will find ideas for your mid-century bedroom, living room, wallpapers tips, or just overall furniture ideas if you are still not sure what you want exactly. Step 2. Mid-century colors

Once you know which style you are going with, the first real step into accomplishing a great mid-century modern interior design is choosing the right colors. Take note that mid-century colors tend to combine darker neutral tones with saturated accent colors. And never forget the golden ‘color picking’, also known as the 60-30-10 rule. Your room colors should be 60% dominant base color, 30% secondary color, and 10% accent color. Also, avoid picking more than 3 to 4 colors.
Step 3. Furniture design options
Mid-century modern furniture is easily identified by their straight, clean lines accented with smooth, curved angles. They rarely feature any fancy ornamentation or upholstery. This minimalist design commonly relies on wooden construction, but can also include fiberglass or metal. They usually only have one or two colors with no patterns. However, in Essential Home’s pieces, you can also pinpoint a few Hollywood inspired-lines and ideas, such as the golden details. It brings you right back to the glamorous Hollywood 1960s.
Step 4. Rugs & Carpets
If you are going to choose the perfect rugs for your mid-century modern home, then you have to know how to identify the right mid-century patterns. In practical terms, it is not that difficult. During the golden years of mid-century modern design, people loved asymmetrical and abstract patterns. However, feel free to use rugs and carpets with just a solid color – or even patterns that are not from the 50s or 60s. Because, like we said, at the end of the day, your home decor should reflect who you are.
Step 5. Mid-century lighting
Whether you are going with mid-century floor lamps or a mid-century ceiling lamp, you should take into account the mid-century minimalist lines, which feature either very straight, geometric lines or round, curved contour. They are usually made of finished metal, but sometimes also have wood legs. Ceiling lamps also have exposed bulbs on straight rods radiating out of a center.
Step 6. Accessories & Decor
The final step of getting your mid-century modern decor right is accessorizing. Take the opportunity to put the 60-30-10 rule into practical terms and use your accessories as a statement. You can go with golden details to make your interior architecture pop!
Step 7. Shop for mid-century furniture
Given the versatility of mid-century modern furniture and decor, it’s no wonder that there are abundant shopping options. You can find mid-century and Scandinavian inspired furniture in your everyday store IKEA, or you can go with brands such as West Elm, or Design Within Reach. However, our personal favorites have to be Essential Home and DelightFULL. They bring out the best in mid-century modern design, so of course, we had to include them in our shopping tips!
