Alvar Aalto is considered one of the greatest symbols of the modern Scandinavian style thanks to his unique design projects and product designs. If you’re a design lover who is passionate about this incredible design style, make sure you get to know some of his most famous projects and start designing your amazing Scandinavian style project!
In case you haven’t heard about this incredible interior designer and architect, Alvar Aalto is considered one of the pioneers of modern architecture and design. Born on February 3rd of 1898, the famous architect is also considered one of the first and most influential architects of the modern Scandinavian movement, having been a member of the Congrès Internationaux d’Architecture Moderne (CIAM).
Alvar Aalto‘s work is considered an example of the organic aspects of the modern architecture of the first half of the twentieth century. These iconic fluid shapes are also a huge landmark of his incredible products, whether it is in unique furnishings or sleek modern home decor accessories (like a simple vase).
Over the course of the decades, Alvar Aalto designed several private houses for his personal friends, but there is one that truly stands out “from the crowd”, called Villa Mairea (1938-1939). This mid-century architecture project with sleek Scandinavian interiors was built for Harry and Maire Gullichsen, the director of the company A. Ahlström and his wife, in the Noormarkku ironworks area.
The modern design plan of the Villa Mairea features a creative L-shape, which was one of Alvar Aalto‘s most famous shapes in residential projects. This layout, which automatically created a semi-private enclosure to one side, added a more exclusive, formal edge to confront the public world on the other. This residential project naturally invites the visitor to stay, and despite their somewhat public character, have nevertheless an intimate feel.
When it comes to home decor accessories there is one product that has become as legendary as the incredible Alvar Aalto. The vase is based on the designer’s sketches for a series of glassware Eskimoerindens skinnbuxa (The Eskimo woman’s leather trousers), which he submitted to a design competition held by the Karhula-Iittala glassworks in 1936. The first series of glassware was made to be shown in the Finnish section at the Paris World Exhibition in 1937.
Many of the luxury design brands and best interior designers take inspiration from some of the most famous design legends. Inspired by the unique shape of Alvar Aalto‘s famous Aalto vase, Essential Home has created a unique center table design also known as Franco. This unique piece can easily fit in a trendy mid-century design, but also in a sleek Scandinavian style project!
