What used to be a warehouse at 999 Brannan Street is now Airbnb’s new expanded office space in San Francisco. Company and rental website Airbnb main office is at 888 Brannan Street, which is essentially down the road from the expanded headquarters. To make these new offices a reality, Airbnb environmental team paired up with local architecture firm WRNS Studio.
The result? An inspiring place filled with cultural references.
Everything from the pre-existing structure was taken and stripped down. What remained was a curved glass wall that wraps around the exterior. A wide and open space was designed to meet employees on the ground floor, where light completely flood the atrium, creating a welcoming ambiance.
There are a total of four storeys in the building, which take a different city as a theme. “Colours, patterns and materials from Buenos Aires, Kyoto, Jaipur and Amsterdam are all incorporated into the design of the levels,” explained Dezeen in their article.

“999 Brannan’s design reflects Airbnb’s Belong Anywhere ethos by incorporating elements of its global community into the design of the space,” the company stated. In fact, all the meeting rooms in the new 999 Brannan Street headquarters were decorating having in mind several Airbnb listings across the globe.
One of the meeting rooms mirrors an English castle, boasting green and red tufted Earl Sofas and even a special Victorian window treatment. Another office – which you can see above – was inspired by the looks of an 1880s jail in Montana, featuring a wood-burning fireplace, vintage pieces like hanging lanterns and rustic faux animals skins.
“We wanted to bring the same bespoke nuance to this very large space that we brought to the first small office we designed in Portland,” said Aaron Taylor Harvey, executive creative director of Airbnb Environments. “We want it to feel like a custom home to every inhabitant.”
The new work offices were divided into 16 identical neighborhoods. Each of these neighborhoods houses a meeting room, as well as phone rooms and huge communal workspaces, perfect to entice teamwork. There is also this space called The Castle (fancy, right?), which links the floors together and is covered in pinewood strips.
