London’s Surface Design Show returns for 2017

This year’s Surface Design Show will exhibit the latest materials in architecture and interior design at London’s Business Design Centre from 7 to 9 February 2017. For over 10 years, the Surface Design Show has been the only event in the UK focusing solely on interior and exterior surfaces – connecting architects, designers and suppliers to innovative surface design trends and materials.

This year’s show begins with a live debate evening chaired by David Michon, former editor of Icon magazine, discussing the topic Good Design Is Narrative Design. Returning to the show this year is the Surface Design Show PechaKucha Evening, taking place on 8 February 2016 and hosted by Phil Coffey of Coffey Architects.

“2016 saw the show extending to the gallery level for the first time, creating the biggest and best show to date,” said event director Christopher Newton. “In 2017 visitors can expect even more exhibitors both international and from the UK.”

“A detailed programme of events has been carefully curated ensuring that visitors will be engaged throughout the two and a half days.”

Featured areas within this year’s show are Light School, Stone Gallery and Surface Spotlight Live. Debuting at last year’s show and officially supported by Stone Federation GB, Stone Gallery reflects the rapidly growing stone market in the UK and the important relationship between stone and surface design.

Surface Spotlight Live, curated by trend and design writer Sally Angharad, is an opportunity for architects and designers to see the best of advanced materials in two highlighted fields: hospitality and education. Now in its fourth year at the show, Light School, presented by The Light Collective and supported by the Institute of Lighting Professionals, will inform attendees on pioneering lighting design within architecture. Light School visitors will also be able to experience NightShift, an immersive installation from Reggiani conceived by designers Speirs + Major that explores how artificial light contributes to the personal experience of urban space.

On the final day of the show, The Surface Design Awards recognise examples of progressive designs and surfaces in projects both in the UK and internationally. Winners will be announced for 13 awards across 7 different categories, divided into interiors and exteriors. Each project is judged on a range of criteria, including the type of surface, the use of materials and aesthetic design.
