The refurbishment of apartments is an increasingly common reality in our society. In Lisbon, the Muda Home Design (MHD), completely transformed an apartment for tourism, inspired in the midcentury.
Contrary to what is happening in most large European cities, in Portugal tourist rental apartments or houses is a business growing and with few limitations. For this growth there is a big contribution of the various online platforms that now exist and where you can easily rent your house to tourists not needing to be a hotel owner.
In the recovery of this apartment there was a particular concern with the bedroom and the living room, which experienced the biggest changes, as opposed to the kitchen or the bathroom which were only subject to a slight restyling.

Fundamental parts of this project were some existing pieces of used furniture, in good state of preservation, which have been retained and integrated into the new decor, keeping the connection between what already existed and the new life of this apartment.
In the living room, the used furniture was placed along with some more modern pieces, clear and convenient as the sofa, the yellow support table and television fitment. This space includes also a dining area consists of an old round table with chairs from the same set.
In addition to the living room was the bedroom that had the greatest transformation. Still remained the premise that conducted the project: the existing parts have been reused. As the living room, the bedroom was in good condition. Needed, however, to move from empty space to a comfortable space ready to leave a good first impression and to be the perfect place to rest for a good sleeping night.
To the wardrobe MHD joined two single beds and a bedside table. Textiles brought comfort and colorful frames, suspended linearly on the wall, give life to a former division devoid of it. One of the best qualities of the room is undoubtedly the direct access to the balcony where you can have breakfast with a privileged view of the sunny Lisbon.
A table, two cushioned chairs and a colorful plant. It was enough for the balcony to become functional. The seat and backrest are solid acacia and steel support structure, ideal to have your breakfast outside.
The kitchen, as the bathroom was only cleaned and reorganized, now having a much more appealing appearance, care and clean. The sunroom was also unencumbered and it is no longer place of little random objects that were not more than take up space. A change at home can always start with a good housekeeping, saving space can be a perfect solution.
Simple and with old-fashioned tiles, the bathroom, which was in good condition, had no element that would give you more comfort. Simple elements such as a towel, a carpet, toilet paper and even a small cactus were able to return a new life to this house-of-bath.
This are some ideas how you can easily transform your house on a 1950’s inspiration home, not spending too much money doing it. Now it’s time to get to work and make those changes you always wanted to make.
