Thomas Heatherwick recently proposed a public monument in New York, the “Vessel“.
The Heatherwick Studio has released the first images of “Vessel”, a structure of 15 floors in height, composed of 154 interconnected flights of stairs that will serve as a central element of this new infrastructure in the Hudson Yards, Manhattan.
Inspired by the mesmerizing geometry of Indian Wells, the structure refers to the image of a bee hive or a playground – and, in fact, the project will offer visitors the opportunity to burn a lot of calories in its nearly 2,500 steps.
The proposal takes a conical shape, from 15 meters in diameter at the base to 45 meters at the top. And as if the geometry in itself was not attractive enough, the metal structure is coated with polished panels of copper color, creating reflections in the square below.

“We had to think of something that would act as a milestone,” said Thomas Heatherwick. “Something that could help create the character and particularity of space. The structure is located in the central square of Hudson Yards, where it will be surrounded by perennial gardens and the coverage of native trees, and a variety of choices of places where visitors They can rest your feet.”
The square of the platform is in itself a technical innovation, while serving simultaneously as cover for the rail yards and rainwater tank.
The cost of the project reaches the figure of US $ 150 million, double the original budget of US $ 75 million.
