Studio LOKAL, based in Denmark, won the competition for a residential tower in Copenhagen with The Hanging Gardens, its proposal that melts historic brick buildings of Carlsberg with the concept of a personal garden for each resident.
Located on the site of an old vegetable market, the proposal aims to return to these local roots, encouraging residents to grow their own produce in one of the tower’s gardens. In addition, the ground floor of the building will house a farmers’ market where residents can exchange their own products.

In addition to agricultural operation, the project gardens will cope with rainwater, increasing biodiversity and serving as visual stimulus.
To improve the project’s sustainability factor, materials will be obtained locally, and have been tested for compatibility with local and surrounding climate.
“The use of contextual forms in new combinations gave the building a lot of architectural benefits for the residents. As an example, the layout of the facade creates more than 200 balconies, without compromising the entrance of light of the apartments. In addition, the geometry protects users from wind disturbances, while improving the acoustic environment of the balconies. Finally, the balconies are designed to give the greatest amount of comfort, in relation to daylight and privacy”, the architects of Studio LOKAL described.
Construction of the project is expected to begin in April 2017.
