Materialism Collection candles by Tom Dixon

Tom Dixon has launched a new range of candles ahead of Maison & Objet Paris next month. The Materialism Collection comprises four different ranges, each referencing a different material: glass, stone, metal and marble. Each range has its own scent and finish, and the designs are the result of “adventures in materials,” according to Dixon.

Each of the marble candles, which smell of “dry exotic fig and sandalwood essence,” is unique, thanks to the patterns of its material; while the rough-cast metal alloy candles have a “sharp, clean and light” scent.

“For us, the design process is multidimensional and it could start anywhere, with an inspiration, a formal brief or a serious problem to solve,” he adds. “The success and desirability of the product is inextricably tied in to the substance that forms it, and a great deal of our success comes from the materials with which it is made. But more than that, the mutation of the raw material into an object of desire or an artefact of function is the real alchemy of a designer.”

Earlier this month, Dixon unveiled his new range of stationery aimed at creatives. The sets are inspired by British engineering and made from brass plated solid aluminium.
