Matera has been named a European Capital of Culture for 2019 and it’s exactly where you should be heading this July. This Summer is a good time to visit because you can catch the exhibit “Shameful Architecture,” which kicks off on July 23 and explores shifting perceptions of architecture, such as Matera’s own cave dwellings that were once called “the Shame of Italy” and are now protected by UNESCO. You can even sleep in a cave, with all the modern amenities you need, at Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita, a member of Design Hotels.
