A Mother and Son–Designed Laurel Canyon Wonder
Full Stop Management cofound, Brandon Creed – who manages a prolific list of musical stars including Troye Sivan, Mark Ronson, and Lizzo – relied on the aesthetic fusion of his mother’s vision, decorator Shari Creed, of Studio Creed. They both wanted the space to ooze personality and it’s evident in the guesthouse they dubbed the “chalet”. The pool area received a major update, such as an added vibrant outdoor bar and pizza oven, while in other spaces of the property one can find firepits and a vegetable garden.

One Well-Accessorized Malibu Backyard

Melissa Akkaway comissioned a new Malibu home for her family of four with the help of architects Marmol Radziner and decorator Redmon Aldrich. Outside this dream home, there’s a skate ramp for Akkaways’ children; a victory garden sprouting tomatoes, bok choy and cucumbers; and an olive grove that hosts an alfresco dining area accessible from the indoor kitchen.
“You really can just open it up in the benign climate of Malibu, and live this very indoor-outdoor experience,” says Ron Radziner, a principal at the namesake firm.

Where Mountain Views Dominate, on the Outskirts of LA

Comedian and actor Whitney Cummings encountered the work of designer Jake Arnold and grew more and more inspired by his aesthetic. They soon hit it off and Arnold began transforming what he describes as Cummings’s faux Tuscan villa into a Santa Fe-meets-monastery-inspired abode, layered with plenty of warmth and texture. Many of the changes Arnold and Cummings made were in service of the mountain views—as Cummings put it, “You can’t compete with Mother Nature.”

An Architectural Marvel, Embedded in the Landscape

Joachim Rønning is better known for his nomination for a Golden Globe and Academy Award for his film Kon-Tiki, as well as directing the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean. Alongside his wife, activist Amanda Hearst, they comissioned John Lautner to design their home, and interior designer Clive Wilkinson to design its interiors.
When renovating the swimming pool, the homeowners and architect meticulously researched its original design. The result is a mosaic-tiled swimming pool that feels congruent with the rest of the home. The lip at the far end of the pool was a design solution that Lautner implemented in 1961 so that the cantilevered pool wouldn’t run over the property line.

Sunset Views in Silver Lake

Novelist and television writer Patrick Somerville and his wife, Alexis, settled in their 1920s hillside property in Silver Lake. With attractive Tudor lines and a leafy backyard whose views stretched all the way to the Hollywood sign, it was hard to resist it! They called their good friend Meghan Eisenberg, an interior designer that had worked at Joan Behnke & Associates and now had her own studio, and she helped her them an architect, Jeff Troyer, that gutted the property and created a stunning home for the family. Now, they can enjoy the Hollywood sign views from the pool deck, adjacent grassy lawn, as well as the upstairs balconies.

Seamless Hilltop Indoor-Outdoor Living

Barbara Bestor, founder of Bestor Architecture, was the mastermind behind renovations on Bill Macomber and Annie Weisman’s historic California property. There was a clear emphasis on indoor-outdoor living, where decks are installed on the front and back, the living room is doubled in the pool area, and glass walls can open up to allow easy movement between in and out.
“The house feels porous in the best way,” Weisman Macomber says. “There’s little separation between inside and out.”

A Dining Cabana in Santa Monica

Kathy Taslitz, an interior designer and artist, worked on hers and her husband’s, Matt Grode, dream home vision to decorate their California home. The palette was kept intentionally neutral indoors while a rainbow of colors awaits beyond the expansive retractable doors – a signature Backen element employed in the living room and the upstairs sitting room to foster indoor-outdoor living. “Having lived in Chicago most of my life, there’s nothing that makes me happier than being able to open those doors and bring the outside in,” Taslitz adds.
