Renowned architect Morris Adjmi is known for his ability to create spaces that seamlessly blend with their surroundings. His work on projects like the Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and The Pinch in Charleston demonstrates his mastery of site-responsive design.
Adjmi’s approach to designing FORTH Hotel was to distill the complex history of the Old Fourth Ward District into a contemporary and authentic experience. His attention to detail and commitment to creating spaces that resonate with their location are evident in every aspect of the hotel’s design.
The FORTH Hotel’s exposed concrete diagrid facade creates a striking contrast against the backdrop of the Old Fourth Ward’s Ponce City Market. These diagonal columns not only enhance the building’s aesthetics but also serve as a structural element.
Behind the cast-in-place exterior is a window wall, adding unexpected depth and transparency to the facade. From inside, the diagrid creates unique silhouettes over each guest room window. Below the tower, a three-story gray brick podium features corbeling that artfully frames each window opening. While the tower portion stands out, the podium’s design reflects the surrounding area’s scale and materiality.
Morris Adjmi and his team opted for a late mid-century modern, 1970s visual vocabulary for the FORTH Hotel. The 196-guest room property and its public spaces exude a moody, cinematic aesthetic.
The hotel offers a range of amenities, including a massive 2,300-square-foot rooftop pool, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a co-working space, and a 350-seat events space. The soon-to-be-unveiled members club is expected to attract both visitors and the neighborhood’s young creative professionals.
The hotel’s four restaurants include the ground-floor Italian steakhouse Il Premio and the rooftop cocktail lounge Moonlight. The latter features zebra-print upholstered sofas and a striking “full moon” mural-adorned marble fireplace, reminiscent of the large public works found along the nearby Eastside Trail.
The lobby and concierge desk at FORTH Hotel feature a mid-century modern aesthetic, with dark-stained walnut wood paneling and geometric screens that reflect the building’s triangulated shell. A large wall-mounted mountain scape tapestry, furnished by BDDW, adds a striking focal point.
The space is filled with a mix of vintage and contemporary furnishings and luminaires, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Wilderness-themed elements, such as taxidermied foxes, pinned butterflies, and natural foliage, add a touch of nature to the concierge desk area. Wood-burning fireplaces throughout the property further enhance the cozy and inviting ambiance.
The 157 guest rooms at FORTH Hotel offer a blend of Southern hospitality and modern comfort. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide ample natural light and stunning views of nearby parks. Oak flooring is complemented by hand-knotted antique rugs, while floral wallcoverings add visual depth.
The bathrooms feature travertine-topped vanities and stylish three-tone pattern tile surfaces. For a luxurious touch, Hinoki-scented toiletries and diffusers emitting Le Labo perfume are provided.
The 39 apartment-style suites at FORTH Hotel are designed to feel like a home away from home. A minimalist approach allows the suites to be comfortable and inviting.
Earth tones dominate the color palette in the separate living spaces, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The kitchens feature lacquered brass hardware, sage green cabinetry, and farmhouse sinks, adding a touch of Southern charm.
