The Artist

Alessandro Mendini was born in Milan in 1931. Even those who have never heard of it may have been influenced by his work. He, who has worked as a journalist, writer, critic, editor, curator, consultant, designer and architect, has served as a stimulus for young designers who want to create works with true meaning. The artist is also revered by great thinkers and industrialists. So it can be said that Alessandro Mendini plays a key role in the revitalization of creative planning both in his country and in the rest of the world.

Today, at eighty-five, his smiling personality, calm and creative, and its unceasing vitality, is an inspiration to all who come to know him. And those good feelings are present in your flow of ideas and approaches in the fun, humorous and colorful of their works. Performing amazing combinations of different historical and cultural styles, Mendini not only paved the way for postmodernism in design as it was beyond. It goes beyond the borders of constructivism, releasing the thought of how the project should be developed and realized.

His creations

After being one of the protagonists of the movement ‘Radical Design’, Alessandro Mendini was a founding member of Global Tools, an anti-design movement group. In 1979, he joined with the Alchimia studio that created objects with reference to popular culture kitsch. officially began his career and gained experience in Nizzoli studio, creating objects, buildings and pilot plans. Years later, in 1989, he opened with his brother Francesco, the Atelier Mendini.

Over many decades, Alessandro Mendini was the author of several works in various countries. He created decorative objects, furniture, interior layouts, facilities, buildings and books, such as ‘Paesaggio Casalingo’, ‘Architettura addio’ and ‘Il progetto infelice’. Among the most striking architectural proposals then Alessi Omega house, the new Olympic pool in Trieste and the Bicchieraia Theater Arezzo, Italy; a tower in Hiroshima, Japan; the Museum of Groningen, the Netherlands; and the Casino Arosa in Switzerland.

Alessandro Mendini also worked as a designer and consultant for various international brands such as Magis, Alessi, Philips, Cartier, Bisazza, Swatch, Hermès and Venini. His passion for art became beautiful playful pieces. And many works were based on the interpretation and reinterpretation of shapes and proportions of legendary objects from other designers.

An excellent example is the Proust chair, emblematic part of the last century. Originally combined with more Baroque style but was altered by Mendini. Only this part has been redesigned several times by the artist, appearing with new textures, colors and materiality. A true intellectual exercise. And proof of the importance of his art is that many of his creations are scattered in museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Pompidou Centre in Paris.
