Nestled amidst the picturesque landscapes of Aspen, the aptly named Happy Hill residence stands as a testament to blissful living. With sweeping vistas that captivate the soul, this abode serves as a sanctuary from the chaos of the outside world. Recently adorned by renowned designer Patrick Mele, a distinguished member of the ELLE DECOR A-List, Happy Hill underwent a transformation tailored to the tastes of its owner, Sarah Kennedy Flug. A longstanding resident of Aspen, with 27 years steeped in the town’s rich tapestry, Flug’s acquisition of the Skidmore, Owings & Merrill–designed home in 2020 marked the beginning of a new chapter in luxury living.

Following a recommendation from a mutual acquaintance, Flug enlisted the expertise of Mele, accompanied by architect Mark Noel, to orchestrate the transformation of her abode. “I sought out a decorator with an unwavering enthusiasm for color, someone well-versed in the rules of design yet unafraid to challenge convention,” Flug remarks. The synergy between Flug and Mele was palpable, as their shared vision sparked an instant connection. Their collaboration transcended mere professional rapport, manifesting in shared laughter and a seamless exchange of thoughts and ideas.

Acquiring the property five years following the passing of her husband, the visionary entrepreneur Marty Flug, Sarah Kennedy Flug embarked on a new chapter in her life’s journey. Originating from the creative landscape of the 1980s, the sprawling 13,000-square-foot domicile boasts a distinctive architectural motif reminiscent of interlocking A-frame barns. Its storied past includes serving as a guardhouse for a Saudi prince residing in the adjacent estate. Despite its close proximity to Aspen’s bustling downtown, the residence is ensconced within 10 acres of pristine wilderness, evoking memories of Flug’s upbringing in Oregon. Each day, the tranquil expanse of her backyard plays host to a mesmerizing spectacle as a herd of wild elk graces her presence. “I share a unique connection with them,” Flug muses, underscoring the profound harmony she finds within the embrace of nature.

Throughout the meticulous yearlong renovation process, Mele navigated the project with the finesse of a seasoned tightrope walker, delicately balancing the exploration of daring decor choices while ensuring each step forward was purposeful and precise. “We aimed for subtlety and complexity, weaving together elements of the past and present, juxtaposing rawness with refinement,” he explains. The vibrant outcome mirrors the vivacious spirit of the home’s inhabitant on a grand scale. “Sarah may be petite in stature, but her affinity for grand, lavish furnishings is unmistakable,” observes Mele. For Flug, her residence serves as a poignant reflection of her identity. “This home embodies the essence of my journey, my very existence,” she reflects. “Every corner resonates with joy and serves as a daily affirmation of the happiness I choose to embrace.”
