Josehp Leopold Eichler (1900-1974) was a 20th century post war American real estate developer known for developing distinctive residential subdivisions of mid-century modern style tract housing in California. He built a company that between 1949 and 1966 made over 11,000 houses in nine communities in Nothern California. Eicher hired local modernist architects to design homes that would be different from the traditional architecture.
But which are the reasons that makes these houses so special?

1. Glass Facades
Due to glass facades, the houses receive natural light, giving it immediately a different life and perception of the space. It brings the nature inside the house and who doesn’t love the calming effect it has?
2. Contact with nature
Something we love about Eichler homes is exactly that connection with nature. The open spaces, the glass facades, the never-ending want to bring the nature elements inside, elongating the space as well and making the house seemed a lot bigger and less cluttered.

He was attracted to the style and decided to produce similar designs. Also became a precursor of the architectonic language of Mies Van Der Rohe , and as Mies used to said ” less is more” .
5. Economic solutions
On the interiors, the homes are fitted with local materials, like the red wood from Northern California. He was inspired by the idea that the middle class families could also benefit from architectural designs without having to pay an arm and leg.
In the beginning, Eichler homes found their success within a passionate group of buyers that enjoyed the simple but elegant design of the houses that offered a perfect synthesis between social and artistic goals. But as demand grew, and buyers requested more customized designs, Eichler had to adapt his offer and mass-development strategies to keep up with the requests.
Because of its architectural characteristics and expressive geometry, the Eichler house project marked the end of a period focused on middle-class home designs. It was, however, just the beginning of a new chapter for Joseph Eichler that throughout his career always was in-between the industry visionary and leading developer, creating a unique blend of art, marketing and mass-developing.
