Believe it or not, the roots of mid-century modern style trace back to the modernist movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This period gave rise to the Bauhaus and minimalism schools of design from which mid-century modern style is derived. Mid-century modern style as we know it now began in the 1930s and developed through the 1960s. The term was first coined in the 1950s and now refers to a distinct vintage style that boasts such well-known historical pieces as the Eames lounge chair, tulip chair and egg chair.
Mid-century modern, while a somewhat distinctive style, is also versatile. Medium and dark wood tones abound and clean lines are prominent. Essential forms are key: no ornate furnishings or excessive decoration. Keep it simple and organic but don’t be afraid to mix elements! Wood, burnished metal and even marble mix well together in a mid-century modern living space.
Mid-century modern style can be identified in the subtle style details that combine to create the overall look. Curved lines, arched floor lamps and splayed or tapered legs are some of the most tell-tale hallmarks of mid-century modern style.
Graphic patterns add a pop of contrast to your space. Put down a colorful rug, abstract wall art or even a patterned ottoman. If you own vintage pop art, even better! Bringing the outdoors inside was a relatively new and trendy concept in the 1950s and 1960s so the more plants and greenery, the better!
