In 1949, engineer Ahmed Chahroudi bought the island and commissioned Wright to design the house. Originally, the architect drew a 5,000-square-foot house that the owner could not afford, so the project suffered a resize to 1,200-square-foot cottage instead. Instead. years later, the island was bought by John Massaro who decided to bring Wright’s original plans to life, enlisting an architect and Wright scholar to finish the project in 2007.
“An architectural masterpiece showcasing the pinnacle of design and engineering, the property offers an amazing backdrop for living and entertaining surrounded by the stunning beauty of the 593-acre lake.”Just the entrance of the home already gives us Wright and mid-century vibes and we are certainly obsessed with the incredible natural light and wooden details everywhere.
A second guest house, tea house, beach, dock and helipad add to the many pleasures of this pristine oasis, ideally located 1 hour north of New York City. A quick helicopter ride from Manhattan or Westchester airport, or a 5-minute boat ride from the mainland insure easy access to this extraordinary setting.
It’s definitely common opinion that this design has Wright written all over it, but certain details could very well have been changed from the original design, considering the project was finished by a different architect, even if a scholar of Wright. Nonetheless, the charm is there, from the beautiful interiors to the skylights.
The natural light and wooden ceilings with layers are especially stunning, but when it all comes together with natural elements such as the rocks on the walls, organically merging with the surroundings, it’s really a beautiful picture in its whole.
This home in Petra Island is a mid-century dream come true, bringing back the inspiration that is Wright’s work and designs. Now on sale for $12.9M, this vintage home with a modern vibe is ready to receive its next mid-century lovers.
