In the northern city of Italy, in fact, live the most famous Italian interior designers, that chose Milan as the place in which unleash their inner creative genius. Ettore Sottsass has been among the most brilliant interior designers of ’80s. With the collaboration of a group of young designers, in 1981 he founded The Memphis Group, named after the Bob Dylan’s song “Stuck inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues again”. In a short time, this group revolutionized creative and commercial logics in design, becoming a symbol of New Design.
Despite its short live (the group split up in 1988), Memphis has still a great impact on the design of furniture, architecture, and household items. Christian Dior, Missoni and Karl Legerfeld are only some of the fashion designers who got inspired by this group for the launching of their new collections.
From 1997, Sottsass developed the brand Post Design, operating through the same philosophy of surprising the public with new and singular pieces of design.
Memphis furnitures, in fact, distinguish themselves among the others for being coloured, eccentric, bizarre.
This year design lovers will admire Memphis’ creations at the world’s most prestigious furniture fair, il Salone del Mobile in Milan. During this year’s edition of the tradeshow, which will take place next week (from the 4th to the 9th of April), Memphis Milano will celebrate one hundred years since the birthday of Ettore Sottsass with a special exhibition, named “Less is Less, Sottsass and Memphis”. Don’t miss this event!
