W\u00fcstemann created Interior Design<\/em> <\/strong>of five large apartments named Ateliers in the stony, vaulted spaces of the old workshops.Swiss architect Gus W\u00fcstemann \u00a0has subdivided a 19th-century building\u00a0in Zurich\u00a0into nine flats\u00a0with concrete and chipboard\u00a0finishes that complement its existing\u00a0vaulted ceilings and stone walls. Located in the Seefeld area of the Swiss city, the original\u00a0building consists of two structures: a traditional four-storey residential house dating from\u00a01850 and an extension in front, which was built later to host a car repair garage and warehouse.<\/p>\n

The city council has recently protected the outlines of the entire complex, so W\u00fcstemann had to work inside the existing walls. He stripped the interior plasterwork to reveal an existing stone wall\u00a0that features\u00a0throughout the renovation, named\u00a0Natural Stone Wall.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe historic, massive stone walls were the starting point for applying new contemporary forms of living,\u201d said W\u00fcstemann.\u201dThe wall was freed of its covering layers and we organised the space and programme in reference to the wall.\u201d The five apartments occupying the\u00a0townhouse feature open-plan living areas designed around the stone wall, which is complemented by a series of \u201craw\u201d material choices. Clipboard doors slide open to reveal a bathroom behind, while large polycarbonate light boxes offer diffuse lighting.<\/p>\n

\u201cA fluent plan like a promenade helped to reach an endless space, instead of an addition of small spaces.\u201d<\/p>\n

These include a series of built-in concrete furniture, like\u00a0the kitchen islands and the\u00a0bathroom washbasin, and wooden windows that are\u00a0mounted directly onto the slabs.<\/p>\n

\"Stones<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cIn the workshops we answered to the large natural stone arches with a topography of concrete \u2013 a contemporary response to a strong historical element,\u201d the architect explained. In this space, the end of the\u00a0existing stone wall marks a division between the lounge at the front, and the kitchen and dining room at the rear. Simple materials are used inside, including lightweight plaster walls, concrete and wood.<\/p>\n

On the other side, the lounge is lit from above by a skylight in the roof.<\/p>\n

W\u00fcstemann\u2019s studio has offices in Barcelona and Zurich. His other projects include a house in Spain with a largely windowless exterior and a home and poolhouse with walls of concrete, oak and travertine.<\/p>\n
