India Mahdavi is the reigning queen of colour. \u201cIt\u2019s the best way to bring the sunshine into a space,\u201d says the Paris-based interior designer. \u201cSunshine is happiness, and my work is about happiness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her courageous clients call for more. \u201cThey aren\u2019t looking for mainstream,\u201d Mahdavi explains. \u201cThey tend to be people who are looking ahead.\u201d Indeed, the strong individuality of her rooms is not for the faint of heart.<\/p>\n

Take, for example, restaurateur Mourad Mazouz\u2019s Gallery at London\u2019s Sketch complex. The main brief Mahdavi received for the space was to incorporate 239 black-and-white drawings by artist David Shrigley. She says the client initially decline when she announced that the room\u2019s walls, as well as its curvaceous chairs and banquettes, were to be bathed in pink. \u201cBut in the end, he trusted my vision,\u201d she remembers, and the restaurant became an instant triumph and Instagram hit.<\/p>\n

Mahdavi attributes her love of color to her Irani-Egyptian heritage and cosmopolitan childhood. Born in Tehran, she was raised in America, Germany, and France. During college, her studies kept her moving, from Paris\u2019s \u00c9cole des Beaux-Arts to New York\u2019s School of Visual Arts and Parsons, before she\u00a0 established in the French capital to work as artistic director for Christian Liaigre. \u201cLocation is the starting point for all my projects,\u201d she says. \u201cEach fits one location, one client. So they are all like couture pieces.\u201d<\/p>\n

After seven years with Liaigre, she set out on her own in 1999 and now oversees a studio, showroom, and shop\u2014all within a few doors of one another on the rue Las Cases.<\/p>\n

Though awarded France\u2019s Officier des Arts et des Lettres last year, Mahdavi is still a\u00a0 little under the radar Stateside. But she predicts her audacious aesthetic sense is where the zeitgeist is headed. \u201cAfter decades of beige and white, Europeans are finally bringing colour back into their living rooms,\u201d Mahdavi says. \u201cI think America is probably ready, too.\u201d<\/p>\n
