An exhibition of abstract paintings and drawings by late architect Zaha Hadid<\/a>\u00a0is to be hosted at\u00a0the\u00a0Serpentine Sackler Gallery<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>in London.\u00a0Calligraphy and sketches from the architect\u2019s notebooks will be included in the show, which opens on 8 December and brings\u00a0together work that dates back to the 1970s.<\/p>\n

The focus of the Zaha Hadid Early Paintings and Drawings exhibition will be on pieces created by the architect before she completed her first building \u2013 the Vitra Fire Station<\/a> in 1993.<\/p>\n

Hadid often used calligraphic sketches to visualise ideas and spaces, sometimes using paintings as precursors to buildings. Pieces in the exhibition include concept designs and canvases made up of colourful, geometric shapes.<\/p>\n

Hadid, who had a\u00a0long-lasting interest in \u201cabstraction and explosion\u201d, was particularly drawn to the\u00a0work of Russian painter Kazimir Malevich.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was an early influence for me as a representative of the modern avant-garde intersection between art and design,\u201d said Hadid, who died earlier this year following a sudden heart attack.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was Zaha Hadid who went first and furthest in exploring this way of innovating in architecture \u2013 without as well as with, the support of advanced software,\u201d added Zaha Hadid Architects director Patrik Schumacher.<\/p>\n

The exhibition was first conceived in partnership with Hadid, who renovated and extended the gallery in 2013. Her 2007 Serpentine pavilion, which features a trio of toadstool-like structures, was put up for sale earlier in the year.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer contribution to architecture as a pioneer and visionary cannot be overstated, and her declaration that \u2018there should be no end to experimentation\u2019 has become a mantra for the Serpentine Galleries as it looks to the future,\u201d said gallery\u00a0director Hans Ulrich Obrist.<\/p>\n

Early Paintings and Drawings opens on 8 December, and will continue until\u00a012 February 2017.<\/p>\n
