Home design influencer\u00a0Kate Pearce<\/a>\u00a0agrees. \u201cEclectic style doesn\u2019t mean just throwing a bunch of disparate items together in a space,\u201d she notes. \u201cHave elements that pull it all together\u00a0and make the room feel cohesive. That usually involves some level of restraint.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn other words, use color intentionally,\u201d Ackerman advises. She personally decorates her home with orange, green, pink, and a few pops of blue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Home design<\/a><\/strong> influencer\u00a0Tiffany Barino<\/a>\u00a0feels similarly. \u201cNot having one signature color throughout, conjoining the different styles, can make the space appear more messy than collected,\u201d she comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen attempting to achieve an eclectic style<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, often people will collect pieces<\/a><\/strong> over time,\u201d designer\u00a0Michelle Gage<\/a>\u00a0explains. \u201cThat\u2019s certainly a good way to achieve the look, but if you aren\u2019t designing a room<\/a><\/strong> all at once, you really need to be paying close attention to the scale of each and every piece you\u2019re sourcing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA swirl of different colors and patterns goes a long way to achieving an\u00a0eclectic look<\/a>,\u201d Gage says. But keep in mind the size of various prints\u2014as Gage puts it, \u201cYou can\u2019t have a whole room<\/a><\/strong> full on only oversized patterns; you need scale printed to provide balance and contrast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think people mistake eclectic for\u00a0maximalism<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0so they pack on the d\u00e9cor and then feel overwhelmed,\u201d home design influencer\u00a0Monica Benavidez<\/a>\u00a0says. \u201cThe styles definitely go together, but if you\u2019re transitioning to a more eclectic style in your home, resist the urge to add a lot of d\u00e9cor<\/a><\/strong> right off the bat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

06. Paying Too Much Attention to Traditional Design Rules<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Why not make the design process joyful? \u201cBuy and collect pieces<\/a><\/strong> you love, whether they\u2019re from the 18th century or the 21st, and just have fun,\u201d Pearce encourages. \u201cOne of my favorite spots in my home combines a 19th-century ornate chair, a sleek mid-century desk, postmodern d\u00e9cor pieces, and a kitschy popsicle stick table lamp.\u201d Though this feels like it shouldn\u2019t all work together, it does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
