The auction of furniture and tableware from the iconic\u00a0Philip Johnson<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0\u2013 designed The Four Seasons restaurant in Manhattan has brought in over four times the original estimate.\u00a0Tuesday\u2019s sale \u2013\u00a0slammed by critics as \u201cpainful\u201d\u00a0\u2013 raised over $4.1 million (\u00a33.1 million) as collectors rushed to obtain parts\u00a0of the iconic Modernist interior, which was one of the last of its kind.<\/p>\n

All of the\u00a0650 lots\u00a0were sold by auction house\u00a0Wright, which specialises in 20th century design. Some of the pieces designed specifically for the restaurant by Johnson and\u00a0Mies van der Rohe\u00a0fetched more than 10 times the expected value. The highest bid\u00a0was for one the The Four Seasons signs installed on the entrance stairs designed by American illustrator Emil Antonucci, which depicts a quartet of bronze trees at different stages of the year. Estimated to fetch between $5,000 (\u00a33,800) and $7,000 (\u00a35,300), the sign was sold for $120,000 (\u00a390,700).<\/p>\n

Van der Rohe\u2019s Barcelona furniture in the lobby went in three lots for a total of $50,000, while the stools surrounding the bar of the restaurant\u2019s Grill Room were sold in 10\u00a0lots for a total of $183,750.
\nTableware sets by industrial designer Garth and critic Ada Louise Huxtable \u2013 a rare design collaboration between the couple \u2013 were among the most popular items. One collection of stemware was bought for $35,000 (\u00a326,500), and a set of ashtrays was re-homed for $12,500 (\u00a39,500).<\/p>\n

\u201cThe response to this auction is a testament to the beloved icon that is The Four Seasons and to the owners, Alex von Bidder and Julian Niccolini, who have operated the restaurant for over 40 years,\u201d said Wright founder and president Richard Wright.\u00a0The auction took place at the restaurant designed by\u00a0Pritzker Prize-winning American architect Johnson in Van der Rohe\u2019s Seagram Building on Park Avenue, where it has been located in 1959.<\/p>\n

The building\u2019s proprietor Aby Rosen announced that he did not plan to renew the lease in June 2015, causing The Four Seasons owners to sell off the furniture and smaller items.\u00a0Critics said the decision marked the destruction of \u201cone of the rarest phenomena in Modernism\u201d \u2013 in which the architecture, furniture, table settings were created as a complete work. All of the pieces were selected by Johnson for the space.<\/p>\n

The restaurant\u2019s fixtures and fittings are listed, so the space cannot be renovated entirely.\u00a0The Four Seasons closed its doors to customers earlier this month. It will move just a few blocks up Park Avenue to a new location, which will be\u00a0designed by Brazilian architect Isay Weinfeld\u00a0and is scheduled to open next year.<\/p>\n
