Modern and mid-century design lovers: If you\u2019ve ever built a house or just decided to spruce up the exterior with a few updates, you know how hard it is to find a mailbox that fits. M<\/strong>odbox\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>took inspiration from mailboxes produced in the 50s and 60s and created the\u00a0Retro Mid-Century Modern Mailbox\u00a0to help solve the major void in mid-century mailboxes.<\/p>\n

When mid-century modern enthusiast\u00a0Greg Kelly\u00a0made the bold choice to downsize by half his 3,000 square foot home in Raleigh, North Carolina and give it a fully modern renovation, the finishing touch was a modern mailbox to complement the home\u2019s aesthetic. But when finding such a mailbox turned out to be a nearly impossible task, the undeterred entrepreneur set out to make his own.<\/p>\n

After scouring eBay and Etsy for vintage mailboxes and poring over prior\u00a0mailbox patents and old Sears and Montgomery Ward catalogues, Greg came up with a model that incorporated the best design elements used by manufacturers in the \u201850s and \u201860s. He dubbed it the\u00a0modbox, and after a successfully-funded Kickstarter campaign, it is now being manufactured by a fabricator in Knightdale, North Carolina, twenty minutes from his home in Raleigh.<\/p>\n

Down to its very last details \u2013 the Eichler color palette\u00a0or Neutraface number font, for instance \u2013 the modbox holds ample appeal for lovers of mid-century modern design. And as such, we were excited to sit down with Greg to learn more about the modbox, the mid-century modern market, and the challenges facing an independent design company.<\/p>\n
