Two decades ago,\u00a0Architectural Digest<\/a>\u00a0featured in one of its issues the director\u2019s newly designed apartment, and today we\u2019re feeling\u00a0reminiscent of that classic and vintage design.\u00a0New York\u00a0native Martin Scorsese could not have chosen any other city to settle down. Today we show you hist vintage apartment<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

When trying to choose a place to settle, Scorsese stated that \u201cI\u2019m a die-hard New Yorker, but I\u2019ve spent my life mak\u00ading movies and living on location. When I was ready to make a home for myself, I didn\u2019t know what style of living in Manhattan would make me feel most comfortable. (\u2026) I certainly wasn\u2019t going back to Elizabeth Street. But where did I belong?\u201d. And finally, Martin Scorsese understood that he belonged in a classic townhouse in the Upper East Side.<\/p>\n

His designer at the time,\u00a0Karen Houghton, mentioned that Martin Scorsese had an \u201caustere, almost monastic sensibility\u201d and, most importantly, that \u201call his possessions had a personal meaning for him\u201d. \u00a0The\u00a0Eames chairs\u00a0that the director had in his previous apartment surely made it into the \u201cpersonal meaning\u201d list, seeing as he made sure to bring them with him.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the decoration of each floor in the apartment was thought according to its function. For example, the first-floor dining room opens to the garden, which Scor\u00adsese wanted to have \u201ca provincial country feeling\u201d; and the fourth-floor study is the director\u2019s lair where he works, reads, listens to music and screens films.<\/p>\n

In the living room, we can see\u00a0Renoir\u2019s\u00a0Le Carrosse d\u2019Or<\/em>\u00a0from 1953 and 19th-century Japanese stirrups from actor Ken Takakura.\u00a0There are also original movie posters, of films such as\u00a0Taxi Driver<\/em>,\u00a0Raging Bull<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Aviator<\/em>. We can also see in plain sight a N. Brodsky\u2019s 1937 graphic image for\u00a0La Grande Illusion.<\/em><\/p>\n

Interior designer Karen Houghton mentions that the research for\u00a0The Age of Innocence<\/em>\u00a0inspired the decor in this room, which ended up having \u201ca greater feeling for Victorian pieces and antiques\u201d. Above the circa 1850 English desk are 19th-century Japanese prints from Akira Kurosawa.<\/p>\n

In the dining room, next to the 1870 french dining table, is on display Bernard Lancy\u2019s poster for\u00a0Les Enfants du Paradis,<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>which has a special meaning for the world-class\u00a0film director.<\/p>\n
