David Alan Chipperfield\u00a0(born 18 December 1953) is a British architect. He is decidedly one of the most globally recognized personalities in architecture and design. His award-winning work has been recognized many times over for its simplicity and clarity of vision.<\/p>\n

Since its foundation in 1985, David Chipperfield Architects has developed a diverse international body of work including cultural, residential, commercial, leisure and civic projects as well as master planning exercises. Although he became known for his work in Germany, where he completed a\u00a0remarkable renovation of the\u00a0Neues Museum on Berlin\u2019s Museum Island.<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0Elbtower, Hamburg 2017<\/span>\n<\/h4>\n

\"davidSituated on an exposed riverside site near the well-known\u00a0Elbbr\u00fccken this new mixed-use building acts as an entrance marker on the eastern edge of the Hafencity quarter and forms a counterpoint to the Elbphilharmonie to the west. The building complements and contrasts with the form of the Elbphilharmonie, rising as a tapered tower above a public atrium. Set to be the highest building in Hamburg, the Elbtower is a key part of the Hafencity masterplan.<\/p>\n

2. Museo Jumex, Mexico City<\/h4>\n

Located on a triangular site within the Polanco area of Mexico City, this new museum building exhibits part of one of the largest private collections of contemporary art in Latin America \u2013 Colecci\u00f3n Jumex \u2013 and is part of a wider urban redevelopment. Overlooked by large commercial buildings, the constrained site is delineated by the major street Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, the Ferrocarril de Cuernavaca railway line and an adjacent property to the east.<\/p>\n

3. Selfridges Duke Street<\/h4>\n

Selfridges is a central London department store housed in a grand, beaux-arts style building on Oxford Street, which opened in 1909. By the end of the 1930s, Selfridges had expanded into a new building to the north, built in a sober art deco style. Initially, these two buildings were connected via bridges over the intersecting street, but in time the street was built over by a set-back concrete infill building and the road turned into a goods ramp to access the basement.<\/p>\n

4. Villa Eden, Gardone, 2008 \u2013 2015<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n

The\u00a0western shore of Lake Garda is characterized by its mild climate and richly cultivated landscape. David Chipperfield Architects has built two villas on the hillside looking over the resort town of Gardone Riviera. Both buildings are carefully inserted into the landscape with its olive groves and cypress trees. Their volumes are divided into individual one or two-story structures, which are offset to one another following the topography of the hillside.<\/p>\n

5. Hoxton Press, London 2013 \u2013 2018<\/h4>\n

This residential project, won in competition, is located at the south-west corner of the Colville Estate, a housing development in Hackney, east London, built in the 1950s. It forms part of Hackney Council\u2019s program of redevelopment across the borough that calls for around 2,500 new homes to be built over the coming years. Karakusevic Carson Architects was originally commissioned to develop a comprehensive masterplan, which was adopted in 2011.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

David Chipperfield | Bio<\/h4>\n

Chipperfield graduated (1977) from the Architectural Association in London and worked with such award-winning architects as\u00a0Richard Rogers\u00a0and\u00a0Norman Foster\u00a0before establishing (1985) David Chipperfield Architects.<\/p>\n

David Chipperfield has been recognized for his work with an array of honors and awards including membership of the\u00a0Royal Academy of Arts, the\u00a0Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, a knighthood for services to architecture, and the\u00a0Premium Imperiale\u00a0from the Japan Art Association in 2013.<\/p>\n
