In September 2016,\u00a0MAISON<\/span>&OBJET<\/span>\u00a0PARIS<\/span>\u00a0honours one of the most successful interior designers in Britain,\u00a0Ilse Crawford<\/strong><\/em> is named Designer of the Year for the September 2016 fair. She will be the very first Designer of the Year to handle the scenography of the Designers\u2019 Studio, in Hall 8.<\/p>\n

\u201cDesign as a frame for life\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Ilse Crawford started her career as a journalist and was the founding editor-in-chief of\u00a0ELLE<\/span>\u00a0Decoration\u00a0UK. After over a decade in magazines, with a mission to put human needs and desires back at the centre\u00a0of design, she founded her multi-disciplinary practice Studioilse in 2001.<\/p>\n

This sensitivity-driven approach is evident even in her earlier works, with the Soho House Group. For\u00a0ten years, she lent her talents to this international network of exclusive private clubs, hotels, restaurants and spas. During that time, she also completed a great number of projects: a restaurant, Cecconi\u2019s, and the club of the Electric Cinema, both in London, the Babington House hotel in Somerset, the Soho House hotel, in New York City. All of them are evocative examples of her philosophy, to create environments where people feel comfortable, spaces that make sense for those that will use them \u2013 to create a frame for life. This idea, to enhance the human experience, she applies to public spaces, private homes, products and commercial projects. In 2008, for the first Aesop shop in London, she decided to focus on creating an intimate atmosphere, while highlighting the historical dimension of the building\u2019s architecture with thoughtful contemporary accents.

In 2012, she put the same talent to use to reveal the magic of Ett Hem, in Stockholm, where she turned an\u00a0arts and crafts building into a hotel, run like a family home. The following year, her vision turned Duddell\u2019s a private club in Hong Kong, into a collector\u2019s house.<\/p>\n

And in 2014, she redesigned the VitraHaus and came up with the story of a Finnish-German couple, to bring Artek and Vitra\u2019s collections to life.<\/p>\n

The work undertaken in 2015 for the Cathay Pacific first class lounge in Hong Kong is a testament to her\u00a0ability to reconcile the experience of luxury with wellbeing.<\/p>\n

Recent work<\/h2>\n

2016 is just another busy year for Ilse Crawford. As the founder of the Man and Well-being Department\u00a0at the Design Academy Eindhoven, she curated an exhibition of students work on the sense of touch during the Milan Design Week. At Salone del Mobile, Studioilse unveiled \u2018Perching\u2019 a family of stools designed in collaboration with Artifort. As for interior projects, Studioilse completed the first Aesop shop\u00a0in Copenhagen in April and Cathay Pacific\u2019s business class lounge in Hong Kong opens in May.
\nIn September, Ilse Crawford will be named Designer of the Year by\u00a0MAISON<\/span>&OBJET<\/span>\u00a0PARIS<\/span>. As such, she is\u00a0in charge of designing the Designers\u2019 Studio, a work and networking space located in Hall 8 of the Parc des Expositions Paris Nord Villepinte.<\/p>\n

Awards and honours<\/h2>\n

As a designer, an art director, a curator, a lecturer and an author of three books (Sensual Home,\u00a0Home Is Where the Heart Is, and A Frame for Life), Ilse Crawford was made a member of the Most\u00a0Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE<\/span>) by Queen Elizabeth II in 2014, for her services to interior\u00a0design. In 2015, she received a Doctorate honoris causa from the London College of Communication, University of the Arts London.<\/p>\n
