Increasingly present in commercial and residential projects, industrial decoration emerged in New York in the 1960s and it remains until today, like we can see in this boutique hotel. It is characterized by the reuse of large abandoned buildings, usually factories, warehouses and buildings.
Despite the uninviting appearance, these high-ceilinged places, wide windows and lots of light needed only a restoration to gain new functions. Thus, lofts and ateliers began to occupy these spaces and inspired the emergence of industrial decoration.

An old whiskey factory in Philadelphia, United States, has become a great example of how it is possible to reclaim an abandoned space and turn it into something entirely new. In this case, the boutique hotel with Italian restaurant Wm Mulherin’s Sons.
The 19th-century property was restored and renovated by Method Hospitality and Stokes Architecture. The original features of the building were retained, while the surroundings became more welcoming and inviting.
Mixed characteristics
With areas varying between 53 and 75 square meters, the rooms are equipped with kitchens. The solid wood furniture has been tailor-made and the color palette is simplistic and reminiscent of the old world with extravagant wallpaper. The exposed masonry, as is quite common in industrial decoration, worn wood and antique furniture also refer to the shabby-chic style. Each room has some relics that were part of the building’s past, for example pulley system used to hoist heavy loads. The decor is complemented with pots of minimalist plants such as cacti, and Persian rugs.
Situated on the ground floor, the restaurant has a bar, a dining room with a fireplace and another dining area with a wood oven and a barbecue. The historical features have been preserved, receiving a Scandinavian touch. On the façade, some elements were revitalized, such as terracotta signage and arched windows. With this, the goal is to make the building stand out in a neighborhood in rapid appreciation.
