It’s almost time for Fall to arrive and we bid Summer goodbye, and although many of us will miss the sun and the rich colors of the season, most of us are incredibly excited to what awaits us when September comes around the corner. If you’re looking for inspiration for new projects or just hoping to discover new trends, these are the design events in September you simply can’t miss!

Detroit’s Month of Design

1-30 September, Detroit, USA
Formerly known as the Detroit Design Festival, this month-long celebration of all things design brings together the city’s educational institutions, emerging studios, and established companies to show off their latest work. The project is organized by Design Core Detroit, which was behind the city’s bid to become the first UNESCO City of Design in the U.S.

London Design Biennial

4-23 September, Somerset House, London, UK
The London Design Biennial returns this year with the theme Emotional States, which aims to explore the ways design influences our emotions. The biennial will take over Somerset House with interactive installations, art, and design solutions by participants from 40 countries, cities, and territories.

Helsinki Design Week

5–15 September, Helsinki, Finland
The range of events organised for the Finnish festival includes exhibitions, fashion shows, talks and workshops, along with a growing number of satellite events. The new Children’s Design Week will also create opportunities for the very youngest design fans.

Art Basel Cities: Buenos Aires

6-12 September, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Art Basel is launching its Cities initiative with Buenos Aires as its first partner. The Argentine capital will host a citywide week of programming curated by Artistic Director Cecilia Alemani, who curated the High Line in New York City and the Italian Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale. Highlights include a “cemetery for the living” installation by Italian provocateur Maurizio Cattelan, a sculptural installation along Río de la Plata by Argentine artist Eduardo Basualdo, and a series of talks.

Paris Design Week

6–15 September, Paris, France
Paris Design Week encompasses 2019’s second instalment of edge-of-town trade fair Maison&Objet, plus open studios and design shows around the city centre, with work by students, graduates and upcoming designers.

Maison&Objet

7-11 September, Paris, France
The French capital’s semiannual trade show returns with 3,000 brands, including 600 new exhibitors. This year the fair honors Belgian designer Ramy Fischler, founder of RF Studio, with its prestigious Designer of the Year Award.

Furniture China

9–12 September, Shanghai, China
China’s international furniture expo returns to Shanghai to showcase a range of contemporary and traditional designs.

London Design Festival

14–22 September, London, UK
Taking place all over the capital, London Design Festival includes a series of design shows, including London Design Fair, 100% Design and designjunction. At 100% Design, you’ll be able to find Essential Home at Stand C3A, ready to show you the best design has to offer.

Feria Habitat Valencia

17–20 September, Valencia, Spain
This household design and decoration trade fair hosts 600 exhibitors, focusing on products made in Spain.

Porto Design Biennale

19 September – 8 December, Porto and Matosinhos, Portugal
The inaugural Porto Design Biennale seeks to analyse the current disciplinary configuration of design, proposing a broad reflection on the emerging transformations that define the new millennium and the role of design in a framework of change. A wide programme of exhibitions, lectures, workshops and presentations will be held in several venues in the cities of Porto and Matosinhos.

Beijing Design Week

23–30 September, Beijing, China
Exhibitions and installations are created in Beijing’s hutongs, industrial warehouses and artists’ communities for this design week.

Vienna Design Week

27 September – 6 October, Vienna, Austria
Overseen by director Lilli Hollein, Austria’s largest curated design festival features a range of exhibitions and site-specific installations. Highlights include the Passionswege project, which sees contemporary designers paired with traditional Viennese manufacturers. Every year the event also offers an insight into the creative work of another European country, with Finland set to be guest country for 2019.
