With low ceilings, and a flat roof, there are many more elements in the North Penn House that bring us back to the golden days of mid-century modern architecture.

We conceived of the house as a long low volume with a big roof that would define the edge of the slope and allow the family to inhabit this overlook and feel intimately connected to the surrounding trees and meadow,” said Noah Biklen from Deborah Berke Partners to Dezeen.

The mid-century modern home features a single storey and floor to ceiling glass windows that help to emphasize the modern feeling and embrace the mid-century nature of the surrounding houses at the bottom of the hill. These large windows also allow for a nice view from the main living area to the outside, creating your typical respect-of-the-natural-surroundings mid-century modern architecture is so well known for.

The main area of the house is occupied by a large living area, as well as an open plan kitchen, while the more private rooms such as the bedrooms and the kids’ area were left to occupy the edges of the house.

The design of the house balances literal transparency — where the public rooms of the house connect to the expansive landscape beyond — with privacy, so each of the bedrooms has a view to the outside that is quite focused,” said Deborah Berke.

As for the furniture, the architects and the design team decided to mix mid-century furniture with more contemporary items by names such as Lindsey Adelman, Montis, BDDW, and Chadhaus. Every piece of furniture intends to draw on the architecture and the natural environment surrounding the house.

The color palette for the whole house was kept warm, with notes of leather, wood, and brass that intend to bring the outside in and flatter it.
