Louvre

Besides Louvre being the single largest art museum in the world, it’s also a great monument in the city.

Its establishment as a museum was concluded in 1793 and, last year, it welcomed over 8 million visitors, ranking number one in the world, on that also.

The original building was the Louvre Palace, built in 1546 by Pierre Lescot but in the 10th of August 1793 (which marked the one-year anniversary of the monarchy’s demise) it was inaugurated as the Louvre Museum.

Cathedral of Notre-Dame

I bet that if you were to guess how long it took to build, you wouldn’t get it right. The answer? Almost 200 years. No, not a mistype, 200 years. The groundbreaking (first effort to start building) was in 1163 and completion in 1345.

Notre-Dame is a true embodiment of the french Gothic Style.

If you have the energy for it, we advise you to go up the 387 steps of spiral stairs because, at the top, you’ll see the most amazing and famous bell, accompanied by the famous gargoyles.

Palais Garnier

Inaugurated in 1875, at the time, this building costed over 36 million french francs, and it took 14 years.

In case you don’t know, this is one of the most fabulous opera houses in the world.

The Basilica of Sacré-Coeur

Its construction began in 1875 and it was completed in 1914 but only formally dedicated in 1919, after the 1st World War, when its national symbolism had shifted.

Architect Paul Abadie was the one behind the whole project, after winning the competition against 77 other architects, but he failed to see its inauguration, since he passed away in 1884.

Arc de Triomphe

One of the most famous landmarks in Paris, the Arc de Triomphe was built as an homage to the ones that passed away in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. You can even see the names of war generals engraved there.

Its construction started in the 15th of August, 1806.

École Militaire

Established in 1750, the École Militaire is a huge complex of buildings gathering several military training facilities.

It was built after the War of the Austrian Succession with the aim of it being an academic college for cadet officers from poor families.

The construction began in 1750 and was completed in 1760.

Grand Palais

With around 1.5 million visitors in 2017, the Grand Palais serves as a historic site, exhibition hall and a museum.

With a Baroque architectural style, the construction for this magnificent building began in 1671 so that it could be inaugurated later, in 1678.
