Although Christmas is a global festive time, there are certain aspects that vary from culture to culture. These are Christmas Traditions from around the world.

Poland

In Poland, there is a very uncommon tradition worldwide that involves people cleaning their homes from top to bottom to get it ready for Christmas.

Another part of the Christmas Culture includes people eating a lot of tangerines so that the house, after it is all cleaned out, smells like tangerines.

Another thing to point out is that Poland is a very Catholic Country and so, they have religious traditions like, Christmas time begins on the Advent, a time where people make a lot of sacrifices like not eating their favorite food or drinking coffee.

Traditionally, people do not start eating the food in the Christmas Eve until the first star is seen in the sky. Pretty cool, right? Also, the supper traditionally includes 12 different dishes that symbolize good luck for the 12 months to come.

Australia

Here is a fun fact: Christmas is in December so… it is summer there! No so fun fact: in Australia, summer holiday and Christmas holiday is the same thing (from December to February).

A few of their traditions include Carol Singing on Christmas Eve and deep house decoration.

Another awesome fact about Christmas time in Australia is that people there are very charitable and, as a result, there is a street in Australia that raises over $35.000 every year during Christmas time.

Portugal

Our country has a couple of special traditions, most of which regard food.

In Portugal, more importance is given to Christmas Eve than Christmas day. On Christmas Eve, the family gets together and celebrate by having dinner, which usually includes boiled codfish, and the opening of the presents under the Christmas Tree at midnight.

There is also a very strong, and religious, tradition which is going to Missa do Galo. This Mass is held to celebrate the birth of Jesus and there, people line up to kiss a representation of baby Jesus.

One must is having a Christmas Tree all decorated and a Nativity Scene with baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, the sheep, a cow, a donkey and the three Wise Men. But, fun fact, Christmas Trees only became popular in the 70’s.

One rich part of Christmas in Portugal is having a wide variety of deserts which include lampreia de ovos (egg based sweet), rabanadas (fried bread- very good), aletria (basically noodles with sugar), bolo rei (dry cake with crystallized fruit and dry fruit), pão de ló (sponge cake) and filhós and sonhos ( is so special, we can not describe it), pudding (pudim) and tronco (chocolate log).
