Helix Bridge: the spectacular bridge of Singapore

Ever heard of the Helix Bridge? Probably not, but you can be sure that once you get to know this bridge, you will never forget it again. The reason is very simple: it is spectacular!

There is a saying that “the dream of the architect is the engineer’s nightmare,” portraying that the more beautiful the architecture of a building or monument, the more complicated it is for it to be built. Let’s say that this rule does not apply to Helix Bridge.

The bridge, located at Marina Bay in Singapore, has a fabulous and striking double-helix design, inspired by the famous DNA structure. But contrary to logic, this style not only leaves the bridge more attractive but is also responsible for reducing by five times the amount of steel needed to build it.

The Helix Bridge is Singapore’s largest pedestrian-only bridge, about 280 meters long, 2.4 km of stainless steel tubes and elevated to a height of almost 9 meters from river level. According to the Cox Rayner Group, which designed it, it still supports up to 16,000 people at a time.

Costing $ 68 million, construction was completed in June 2010, taking two years to complete. Today, it is already among the top postcards of Singapore, having also received the award for Best Urban Mobility of the World 2010 at the renowned World Architecture Festival Awards (WAF Awards).

In order for the result to be successfully achieved, a highly sophisticated 3D modeling process has been used. To emphasize the curvature of the structure surrounding the bridge, a modern LED lighting system was installed along the spirals, in addition to the ground lighting, which had a separate dedication to highlight the combination of glass and perforated steel segments.

Curiosity

If you still remember your high school biology classes, you will find this detail sensational. Each night, pairs of green and red buttons labeled “c” and “g” or “a” and “t representing the DNA bases: cytosine, guanine, adenine and thymine generate creative illumination from the ground, collaborating even more for a sensational experience of those who pass by the bridge.
