Walking into celebrity photographer John Russo\u2019s\u00a0mid-century home<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>in Los Angeles is like stepping onto a cloud. \u201cHe was really excited about doing a complete white palette\u201d,\u00a0<\/em>says interior designer Erin Valencich. \u201cHe wanted everything light and bright. Very clean and austere.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This was the second design project for the pair, who\u2019ve worked together professionally on and off for six\u00a0years.\u00a0\u201cHis first\u00a0house was Spanish style and incredibly charming,\u201d the designer says. \u201cWhen he purchased\u00a0this midcentury home, he wanted a complete new look\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To bring the 1957 two-bedroom, two-bath home into the modern day, Valencich and Russo renovated pretty much everything. \u201cWe opened up the kitchen and gut renovated it. We painted the floors, renovated the bathrooms, and painted it all.\u201d They also added a one-bedroom guesthouse below the main house, which sits on a hill in the treetops, with great views of the city.<\/span><\/p>\n

Valencich thought it important to warm up the space, though, so she added touches of color and natural elements to break up expanses of white.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Many of the \u201cpops\u201d are John\u2019s own abstract photography, as well as paintings by his artist father, Dan Russo. Valencich also added warmth with accessories like glass bottles from More Fire Glass Studio<\/span>, rugs from Amadi Carpets<\/span>, and assorted throw pillows from\u00a0Room & Board<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The midcentury modern architecture of the home, she says, \u201cset the stage for a clean-lined space and slightly sparse furnishings.\u201d Given the home\u2019s simple detailing, \u201ceach piece\u2019s shape was important against the architecture and the clean palette,\u201d the designer says, so she sought furniture that could hold its own. A group of petrified wood stools, a sculptural black side chair by\u00a0Siglo Moderno<\/span><\/span>, and the designers\u2019 own Pasadena Chairs<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>all worked to create special standout moments throughout the space.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In every room, on every wall, around every corner, you get the sense this home was thoughtfully curated\u2014not overly collected but designed with restraint and strategy. The partnership of a talented designer and an artist with an eye for composition is everywhere you look.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhite is clean, ethereal, and makes me happy,\u201d Russo says of his color palette of choice\u2014which is a peaceful, soft retreat from the color-happy sets he sees daily, shooting celebrity magazine covers around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n
