They had been house hunting for years and watched as several similar properties got snatched up during the pandemic, so even though the house wasn\u2019t officially on the market they didn\u2019t dillydally. \u201cWe came straight in and said, \u2018Kids, make do, we\u2019ll figure it out in the next few months.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Commanding attention atop Encinal Bluffs, it captivates with panoramic vistas stretching from Broad Beach to El Matador. Its location isn\u2019t just picturesque; it\u2019s strategic. As 1972 ushered in the era of the California Coastal Commission and stringent regulations on oceanfront development, this residence found itself uniquely poised, akin to the tip of a needle, thanks to its early placement.<\/p>\n

Over the course of the subsequent six decades, the property changed hands, with notable owners such as Brad Pitt, as well as Ellen DeGeneres<\/strong> and Portia de Rossi.<\/strong> Each steward infused their own touches while preserving the essence of the pristine, contemporary design emblematic of its era. \u201cI\u2019m particularly drawn to the California aesthetic of the 1970s,\u201d remarks Jens, drawing inspiration from icons like the Eagles, David Geffen, and other luminaries of the period. \u201cJoan Didion\u2019s presence in West Malibu resonates deeply with me; her documentary sparked my fascination with the liberating ambiance of this locale.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Architect Christopher Sorensen<\/strong> orchestrated a redesign of the wall openings to foster seamless connection with both the expansive skyline and the interior courtyard<\/strong><\/a>, ingeniously centered around a majestic Monterey pine tree. The primary challenge arose in reimagining the kitchen layout, a feat conquered by Hallworth and Sorensen through the creation of a slatted bar pavilion and a guillotine window, allowing the invigorating ocean breeze to permeate the space. \u201cIntroducing the ocean\u2019s melody into the interiors<\/strong><\/a> brings an unexpected and deeply emotive dimension,\u201d Hallworth acknowledges, paying tribute to Sorensen\u2019s ingenuity. \u201cThe window stands as a testament to remarkable engineering prowess.\u201d<\/p>\n
