California-based photographer Gray Malin is reconsidering the way we traditionally experience design objects through his latest series \u2018art of living\u2019.<\/strong>\u00a0In the pristine turquoise waters of french polynesia, malin has conceptualized an iconic selection of midcentury modern furniture<\/strong><\/em> set atop a reflective mirrored platform \u2014 refracting an abstract tableau\u00a0of both the pieces, and the surrounding landscape.<\/p>\n

Malin\u00a0has situated archetypal midcentury modern designs by charles and ray eames, eero saarinen, and knoll atop a floating 15 foot square mirrored platform handcrafted with the help of local engineers. Emphasizing the form of the furniture, \u2018artt of living\u2018 was photographed from a vantage point where the colossal mount otemanu presents a symmetrical and stunning backdrop. By situating\u00a0stylized interior design elements\u00a0in an unexpected outdoor setting, the series places\u00a0natural and manmade beauty side-by-side, asking\u00a0viewers to interpret the art of design in a new way.<\/p>\n

The concept nods to both the hotel\u2019s emphasis on design (particularly Mid-century modern furniture) and Malin\u2019s own interest in the design movement. \u201cMy great-grandparents had invested in some Mid-century modern furniture that had been passed down,\u201d Malin recalls. And \u201cit\u2019s something that I personally related to, having grown up with the furniture.\u201d But as much as the final effect looks flawless and beautiful, the logistics \u2014 as evidenced by the creative problem-solving of bringing the furniture to the raft via jet-ski \u2014 was anything but seamless, making the whole effort all the more impressive.<\/p>\n
