The amateur detectives in\u00a0this Hulu and Disney+ show\u00a0are closer to something out of\u00a0Clue<\/em> than Agatha Christie, but their posh apartment building is a plot line of its own, and a joy to look at in every episode. From Oliver\u2019s (played by Martin Short) maximalist interiors<\/strong><\/a> of thick drapery, velvet furnishings, and dark green chinoiserie Pierre Frey wallpaper (Hankeou) to Charles\u2019s (Steve Martin) \u201cpreppy American\u201d luxury furniture<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (Milo Baughman, Ralph Lauren) and orange ombre kitchen wallpaper (French Cuirs leather by \u00c9litis), the homes in this show do quite a bit of character-building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSetting a murder mystery in a luxurious, enclosed environment raises the stakes,\u201d production designer Curt Beech<\/strong><\/a> tells\u00a0AD<\/em>. Season two, which premiered June 28, begins where season one left off: with a murder in Mabel\u2019s (Selena Gomez) stunning apartment in blush and peach hues. Her space is a visual metaphor, with deconstructed walls, a world-weary vintage couch<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, and a hand-painted mural. \u201cShe is literally a work in progress with a history of damage,\u201d Beech says. \u201cWe wanted her space to be as hard to pin down as she is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Furniture with a mid-century vibe<\/strong><\/a> and a tastefully installed Lincrusta wainscoting makes this one of our favorite sets in this list. Although the Creel family\u2019s youthful 1950s-style furnishings<\/strong><\/em><\/a> didn\u2019t fully fit the Victorian architecture of the home, it was a welcome change from the 80s style and furnishings we are so used to seeing from previous seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Filmed at the real-life Claremont House in Georgia and on a soundstage, the large Gothic Revival\u2013style home has a labyrinth of nooks and crannies for secrets to hide. The\u00a0Stranger Things<\/em> design team (including production designer Chris Trujillo, supervising art director Sean Brennan, and set decorator Jess Royal) created a rich and textured environment that would pop on screen both in 1950s flashback scenes and when the\u00a0Hawkins kids discover the home long-abandoned in 1986. The building serves as both homage to\u00a0Scooby Doo<\/em>\u00a0(especially in the Upside Down) and the Well House of Stephen King\u2019s\u00a0It.<\/em><\/p>\n

Dexter: New Blood<\/em><\/h3>\n

Production designer Eric Weiler made the interior of the fictional Iron Lake cabin minimalist<\/strong><\/a> because, besides Dexter\u2019s ubiquitous dark passenger (what he calls his urge to kill), \u201cDexter is a very simple man with few material things,\u201d Weiler tells\u00a0AD.<\/em>\u00a0\u201c[He is] prepared to leave everything behind at any given moment.\u201d This also reinforces a character trait\u2060\u2014and fan-favorite line\u2060\u2014narrated by Michael C. Hall in the pilot: \u201cI\u2019m a very\u00a0neat<\/em>\u00a0monster.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite being sparse, the inside of the cabin still feels cozy, and includes a fireplace with handmade locally-sourced hearthstone. \u201cWe wanted to go for a warm, almost comforting feel, suggesting that Dexter is at peace with his dark passenger,\u201d Weiler says.<\/p>\n

Toni Barton\u2019s production design in the Netflix show\u00a0Archive 81<\/em> is a gem, especially when you look at the remote brutalist LMG house<\/strong><\/a> (filmed at a Tasso Katselas\u2013designed home in Pennsylvania) where Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie) restores the salvaged tapes from the Visser Apartments fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The show, which premiered earlier this year and was unfortunately not renewed for another season, centers mostly around the fictional Visser building in New York City (the exterior was filmed at the 1st Avenue Lofts) in \u201994 and the 1920s Vos Society Mansion that previously occupied the land (filmed in Pittsburgh at both the Willis McCook House and 16th-century-style Tudor mansion Hartwood Acres). All of the symbolism used is the result of Barton\u2019s painstaking research into writer Rebecca Sonnenshine\u2019s series mythology. \u201cNothing is vague, references are specific,\u201d Barton tells\u00a0AD<\/em>, from the sigil stone design<\/strong> <\/em><\/a>at the front of the Visser building to the cults\u2019 symbol and the Baldung ring.<\/p>\n

Cassie (Kaley Cuoco) is trapped between fantasy and reality in this\u00a0HBO Max thriller. In season one the inside of her mind is represented by the high-end hotel suite<\/strong><\/a> inspired by Celia Chu Design\u2019s interiors at the Rosewood Bangkok, where Cassie wakes up next to a dead man. \u201c[Director] Susanna Fogel and I discussed the Hitchcockian mystery [Rope<\/em>] guiding the hand of our show,\u201d season one production designer Sara K White tells\u00a0AD<\/em>. The 1948 film is famously set entirely within one New York City penthouse apartment. Season two (for which Nina Ruscio took over the role of production designer<\/strong><\/em><\/a>) repeats the same technique, placing Cassie inside a stylish hotel bar when she goes inside her own head.<\/p>\n
