One of the major real estate developer\u2019s original homes has just been revamped and we\u2019re loving it!<\/h2>\n

San Francisco-based Klopf Architecture has remodeled a mid-century modern<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0house built by Joseph Eichler, the post-war real estate developer who helped introduce modern housing estates to America.\u00a0Klopf Architecture<\/a>, a San Francisco-based studio, has been working with Eichler homes<\/strong><\/em> for years and what they do is simply amazing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Built in the 1960s, the updated mid-century modern\u00a0Eichler house<\/strong><\/em> is located in the Silicon Valley town of Mountain View. It\u2019s one of the thousands of middle-class dwellings built by Eichler between 1949 and 1966 \u2013 homes often referred to as Eichlers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have worked on over 100 Eichler homes, ranging from small remodels to complete guts and significant additions,\u201d said John Klopf, the firm\u2019s founding principal.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

For this project \u2013\u00a0dubbed the Mountain View Double Gable Eichler Remodel \u2013\u00a0the architects were charged with removing barriers between the kitchen and great room and increasing the size of the master bathroom, among other layout changes. The team also replaced worn finishes \u201cto make a more sophisticated, higher quality home that looks better and functions better<\/em>\u201c. \u201cEveryone loved the classic, original bones of this house, but it was in need of a major facelift both inside and out,<\/em>\u201d the studio said.<\/p>\n

Rectangular in plan, the residence encompasses 1,953 square feet and contains three bedrooms and an office. The center of the dwelling is topped with gabled roofs supported by wooden beams. The team re-clad the aging exterior with new siding made of Western red cedar \u2013\u00a0a material that was also used for the interiors.<\/p>\n

A glass front door framed in yellow leads to a landscaped atrium. Occupying a corner of the courtyard is a small office, while the other sides have glazed walls that look into the main living zone. The team created an open-plan kitchen<\/span><\/a>, living room and dining area by removing partitions. They retained an original brick fireplace and installed cabinetry and an oversized island in the kitchen.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s plenty of storage and space for the whole group to prep and cook together<\/em>,\u201d the architects said. To enlarge the bedroom and bathroom, a master closet was removed and replaced with built-in wooden wardrobes.\u00a0Throughout the home, the team used walnut millwork to offset white walls, and grey porcelain tiles to draw connections to concrete floor slabs. \u201cThe continuity of materials and space enhances the sense of flow,<\/em>\u201d the architects said.<\/p>\n

Floor-to-ceiling glass enables natural light to fill the interior and provides a strong connection to the outdoors. The backyard features a terrace with a large, custom fireplace. Other mid-century modern projects<\/span><\/a> include the overhaul of a 1960s home in Seattle by MW Works, in which walls were knocked down and windows were added, and the restoration of the Julius Shulman Home and Studio in the Hollywood Hills by Lorcan O\u2019Herlihy Architects.<\/p>\n
