The new\u00a0mathematics gallery of\u00a0London\u2019s\u00a0Science Museum\u00a0<\/strong>is complete and was created by\u00a0Zaha Hadid Architects.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>The\u00a0Mathematics: The Winton Gallery is the first\u00a0UK project by Zaha Hadid Architects since\u00a0the firm\u2019s figurehead died earlier this year.<\/p>\n

The gallery aims to host\u00a0over 100 objects from the museum\u2019s science, technology, engineering and mathematics collections. The collection show how\u00a0mathematics impacts\u00a0the world, from trade to travel and architectural form.<\/p>\n

Suspended from the ceiling you can find the inspiration for the gallery\u2019s design, a 1929 Handley Page Gugnunc aircraft.\u00a0Huge three-dimensional curls form a canopy over the space, based on the air flows that would have surrounded the aircraft in flight. The translucent, undulating forms are illuminated by violet light.<\/p>\n

The Gugnunc\u2019s wing design was influenced by aerodynamic research, and is used in the gallery to illustrate how mathematics can be used to solve practical issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cConceived as a wind tunnel for the largest object in the gallery \u2013 a Handley Page aircraft from 1929 \u00a0\u2013 the space follows the lines of airflow around it in a stunning display of imagined aerodynamics,\u201d said a statement from ZHA,\u00a0\u201cInspired by the Handley Page aircraft, the design is driven by equations of airflow used in the aviation industry\u201d.<\/p>\n
