If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to see Call Me by Your Name, one of the 9 Best Picture nominees, we are not going to spoil it for you. Let us just spike your curiosity by telling you that this endearing motion picture takes us through Elio’s journey of self discovery at 17 years old. Call Me by Your Name’s own director, Luca Guadagnino fell in love with a gorgeous 17th century villa a few years back. After having visited Villa Albergoni, a 17th-century estate in Lombardy, the director ended up chosing it as Pearlman’s family residence.
To make everything look real and create the most honest and authentic experience of the 1980s, the director called upon his interior designer friend, Violante Visconti di Modrone. This was the designer’s first time creating a movie set, and she spent more than a month collecting furniture and paintings from antique shops to create the happy, yet almost sad feeling that guides us through the entire movie.

Elio’s bedroom – which was actually more of Oliver’s room (if you don’t know who Oliver is, you really need to go see this movie, ASAP!) – was created to look classic, yet youthful enough that’d make us believe a 17-year-old lived there.
Aside from the classic-looking furniture, a series of 1980s-related props were added to the walls and the desk. A reference to Roland Garros tournament of 1981 can be seen next to the beds.

The Pearlman’s living room was designed to be the heart of the house, a place of culture and leisure. To create this look, di Modrone chose a series of japanese paintings that would hang in the walls, and covered the whole floor with carpets for a more comfortable feeling. The main idea was to create a living space around the classic piano and the television set, which can be seen on the far left top corner.

The Pearlman’s office is all about books. Most of the books actually came with the rented house, as did the scarlet sofa, while other books were rented for the duration of the movie. On the main wall behind the sofa you can also see small pictures of Lombard kings surrounding a gold-framed mirror. To make the office look more even more real and used, a series of archeological props were added.

Aside from all the work that was put into conveying the idea that the Pearlman’s were not a rich and shabby family through their perfectly designed home , the director and the production design team were extremely careful about choosing all the other sets. In fact, director Luca Guadagnino is known for the rich sets of his movies, and this was no exception.
The little village where the characters keep on meeting, the idylic lakes where they swim at midnight or right before sunrise, and the trails where they take their bikes on… Everything was thought down to the last detail to make us feel part of this passionate and thrilling world of mad love.
