This Old Hollywood Star Hideaway Was Turned into a Trendy Malibu Hotel

Surrounded by the woodlands of the Malibu hills, The Native was reborn into a trendy Malibu hotel where we want to spend all of eternity.

What used to be a line-up of bungalows in the 1950s was relaunched as The Native, a trendy Malibu hotel by creative agency Folklor. Nowadays, The Native is a boutique-style hotel that mixes the relaxed vibe of the mid-century modern style with the sense of elegance and refinement we associate with a more contemporary style. Let’s step inside, and find out more about this mid-century gem in Malibu.

The Native was first built in 1947 as a one-storey motel known as the Malibu Riviera Motel. It used to serve as a hideaway for Hollywood movie stars, as well as rockstars such as James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, and Bob Dylan. It was, in fact, the place where Dylan wrote his famous album Blood on the Tracks!

Luckily for all the Hollywood aficionados out there, SKG Investments and Folklor’s new and refurbished place still holds the same original mid-century charm and intimate elegance as their favorite Hollywood stars used to enjoy back in the 1950s.

Inside, the first impression we get is the lobby. Designed by Brooklyn-based designer Jill Lindsey, The Native lobby is a simple space that puts on display home goods and clothing items made by local and international artisans. As for decor, it boasts a stone fireplace and wooden beamed ceilings, adding to the rustic look throughout the hotel.

To create a more eclectic contrast, a contemporary milennial pink sofa, two Jerry Johnson’s mid-century chairs, and a bespoke circular wooden bench were selected by the designer as the stars of the lobby, setting the tone for the whole place.

Outside, there is a small hotel canteen, Coffee & Waffles. It is housed in a 1947 Airstream trailer, and a small outdoor community space was set around it, creating a comfortable setting to be used by the local community. At Coffee & Waffles you will find delicious homemade waffles stuffed with a few vintage classics such as coconut, dried shrimp, and trendy sauces like avocado, and peanut caramel.

Inside, and in an unexpected twist, although every of of the thirteen rooms comes with free WI-FI, none of them has a television set. The idea behind it is that guests are able to enjoy a room with all the modern comfort at the same time they experience a break from the intensity of modern life.

All the rooms were individually curated with a selection of eclectic and mid-century furniture. Amongst them we can find hand-dyed Turkish rugs, 1910 Italian industrial desk tools and vintage ice chests, as well as artwork by local artists. Encouraging the arts and engaging with the local community is definitely one of the things The Native is concerned about.

The guests also have access to a private pebbled patio where they can take in the breathtaking views of the Malibu hills while swinging in a timeless, and custom-made hammock.

You can also enjoy The Native spa service, which includes massages, acupuncture sessions, Reiki, and yoga. If you’re not in the mood to hit the spa, enjoy Malibu at its fullest by visiting their beaches, canyons, going for a swim, a hike, or even mountain-biking!
